Gardens group I

Status:Active, open to new members
Leader:
Group email: Gardens group I group
When: On Wednesdays

Our monthly group meetings usually take place on a Wednesday afternoon, but this depends on a garden opening or speaker availability. We are looking forward to a fantastic summer of garden-related activities!

As parking can be restricted, it would be helpful to use the Lift Sharing section on the website to ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy these activities.

See our Plan for the year so far below. These dates and destinations may change, but you might want to see what we are planning. We are happy to have suggestions and ideas from group members.

We are planning a visit to High Beeches for October, and for November, a talk—dates to be confirmed.

Looking forward to meeting you at the above events. We will email group members a little before an event to confirm details.

You might also be interested that the East Grinstead Horticultural Society meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 7pm to 9:30 pm at The Old Court House.

On Wednesday 16th October we made a private visit to the garden of Coldharbour House - closed, but normally open to the public under the National Gardens scheme. The site occupies 11 acres close to the top of Tilburstow Hill. The views to the South are extensive, with distant sightings of aircraft both taking off and landing at Gatwick.

The cultivated area is on a full southern aspect hillside, which gets invaded by browsing deer, which makes it nigh impossible to cultivate roses. The garden was full of English bluebells, and numerous shrubs were in the earliest of flowering plants.

(Most of) the group. The garden owner, who manages the property with the help of a few assistants, is in the centre of this photo.

This photo gives an idea off the extensive views to the south. At the extreme right you can clearly see Russ Hill to the west of Gatwick

Exocordia Macrantha in full bloom. We were intrigued by this beautiful shrub. Google to the rescue! A couple of quick shots and the plant was readily identified as Exocordia Macrantha "The Bride".
